Gokwe North RDC’s masterplan to guide development

GOKWE North Rural District Council has produced its master plan to guide the district’s development while also addressing challenges which include human-wildlife conflicts.

The rural district council is one of eight such councils in Midlands.

The masterplan was presented by lead planner Mr Brilliant Mavhima during a recent full council meeting.

In November last year, President Mnangagwa directed all 92 urban and rural district council across the country to submit master plans by the end of last month as part of efforts to enhance service delivery.

While many needed extra time there has been a regular flow of master plans over the past few weeks.

Mr Mavhima said the strategic document will help harness Gokwe North District’s potential for sustainable development.

“Gokwe North, with a population of about 249 700 people, boasts diverse natural resources, including the spectacular Gandavaroyi Falls, the Copper Queen Mine, Sengwa Mine and is a leading cotton producer,” he said.

Despite its natural endowments and fast-growing population, the district was grappling with challenges, including soil instability, human-wildlife conflicts and underdeveloped infrastructure. Addressing these challenges while harnessing the district’s potential for sustainable development was crucial if the district was to improve the people’s livelihoods.

“The master plan’s guiding philosophy encompasses several key principles, which include infrastructure development, social improvement, sustainability, heritage preservation, urbanisation, and tourism and hospitality,” said Mr Mavhima.

The masterplan would prioritise improvement of critical infrastructure such as roads, water supply, sanitation, education, healthcare, communication and economic development.

The focus was to facilitate connectivity, improve access to essential services and stimulate socio-economic growth and development.

“The document is promoting social inclusion, participation and empowerment with a particular emphasis on advancing women’s empowerment and child development initiatives.

By fostering community engagement and capacity-building efforts, the plan seeks to create an environment where all residents can thrive and contribute to the district’s progress,” he said.

By showcasing Gokwe North’s natural attractions, cultural heritage and hospitality offerings, the master plan sought to attract visitors, stimulate local businesses and diversify the district’s economy.

“It will also manage urban growth and development sustainably and inclusively.

“This involves promoting compact and well-planned urban areas that prioritise efficient land use, access to services and improved quality of life for residents while preserving the district’s rural character and natural landscapes,” he said.
